How to Use a Dial Indicator?

A dial indicator can be used to measure instruments. The only difference between a dial indicator and a ruler or measuring tape is that a dial indicator can make measurements as precise as to 1/1000 inch. For the people that know how to use a dial indicator, they can use the various dial indicator models to measure objects that are even smaller than a thousandth of an inch. A dial indicator can be used to measure numerous varieties of quantities. There must be, however, a stand or some sort of fixture to enable the dial indicator to be positioned. It would take some level of work to be able to use the full potential of the dial indicator and get measurements as accurate as possible, when put in the right hands, this dial indicator is one invaluable tool to inspectors and machinists worldwide.

First of all, you must choose your own dial indicator. There are various models in the market and the choice that you make should depend on the level of precision desired. As mentioned, the regular models can measure up to 1/1000 of an inch while the test models can measure quantities a lot smaller than the said regulars. This is because the test indicators have a significantly reduced motion range. The more the precision and accuracy of the dial indicator, the more you can expect the cost to be.

Once you have your own dial indicator and you want to start measuring something, you would first have to find something, some sort of fixture that would be able to hold the dial indicator to a slightly more complexly designed fixture that can hold whatever quantity is being measured. A typical stand would have a base that is held up by the weight of the base or something that is fixed up with screws or even a magnet. You can then position the indicator where it would be able to properly measure the quantity. The more complex fixtures would be specialty made stands for more specific, or even general, measurements.

Once you have the fixtures set up, you can now start the measurement. Firstly, you would have to zero the dial indicator on where you want to measure. When trying to measure, the indicator will tell you how far off the item is from the required measurement. These indicators can be fitted with numerous tips that would allow them to be put to use in different applications, different fixtures and for different purposes.

Lastly, always remember to keep your indicator clean. Since a single dial indicator can be used for various purposes, it would be wise and very expedient to keep the said indicator in tip-top condition. Take extra care of the dial and make sure that it is free from debris and chips. Even a very small piece of wood or metal can damage the internal parts of the indicator as they are very sensitive. This will reduce the accuracy, if not throw off any measurements you plan to make.
